Please ensure that your submission adheres to these guidelines exactly. Submissions that do not follow these guidelines will not be considered.
Purple World publishes essays and short stories of personal narrative and literary merit in our anthologies. We want to see your stories and experience your life. Stories should invoke emotion, spark laughter or tears, entertain, share, and educate.
Be sure to check the descriptions of needs in the Calls for Submissions page, in case specific volumes are looking for particular content or themes.
All deadlines are as noted in the Calls for Submissions page. If no deadline is posted, then the submissions for that volume are currently open ended. Check back frequently because deadlines may be added or changed. Submissions must be postmarked by any posted deadline.
Note: We do not accept submissions of poetry at this time.
- Unless otherwise noted in the Calls for Submissions, all essays should be 1000-4000 words long.
- 12-point Times Roman font
- 1-inch margins all around
- Name, address, telephone number, and email address should all be on page 1, which should have no identifying information other than the title on the piece you are submitting
- All contact information and the title of the piece should be in the cover letter
Be sure to spell-check and edit thoroughly. Sloppy work, with mistakes, spelling and grammar issues, and typos will NOT be reviewed or accepted.
Be sure to note, in your cover letter, which anthology you are submitting to, particularly if submissions are open for more than one anthology. We will not take the time to match your story to a project, as we don't have the time. If it is not clear what you are submitting to, your submission will not be considered.
Include a short bio, up to 75 words, in your cover letter.
SASE is required if you expect to hear back from us.
Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please tell us in the cover letter if this is the case. Please also tell us immediately, via email, if a simultaneously submitted piece is accepted by another publication before you've heard back from us.
Mail submission to: Acquisitions Editor, PWP, PO Box 186, Exeter, NH 03833
Note that it is perfectly acceptable to submit to the generic "editor" as our editors often change. Please do not waste your time trying to find a specific editor name. If you feel you must use a specific name, please use the managing editor/publisher's name, Karen Desrosiers.
We are not accepting electronic submissions at this time.
We will do our best to respond to your submission as quickly as possible, however, responses are usually in 2 to 4 months.
PWP reserves the right to edit any submission, including changing the title. We may also request that the author make additions or clarifications. We will share all edit suggestions with the author prior to publication to ensure that your intent has not been changed.
If Your Piece is Accepted:
We will notify you if we wish to accept your work. If it is still available for publication, we will send you a Publisher's Agreement with the terms under which your work will be published. Once you receive the agreement, it must be returned with your original signature, within 14 days. Upon acceptance of the Publisher's Agreement, PWP will pay you $50. You will also receive 2 contributor copies of the anthology in which your work appears. Please note that neither the terms of the agreement, nor the pay, are negotiable.
We purchase First Serial rights to print your piece. That means it must not have been previously published. After it is published in our journal/anthology, all rights revert back to the author and it may be reprinted in another collection.
We are a small company, and unfortunately we can not respond to submission with personalized letters. Please rest assured that if you do receive a standard form rejection from us, we did thoroughly review and consider your submission. You are always welcome to resubmit, with or with out changes, for another journal or anthology.
